Plagued by an injury crisis, Manchester United have re-signed World Cup-winning legend Nobby Stiles.

Stiles is projected to start immediately at centre-back, where he will replace the injured Bailly, Rojo, Smalling and Jones.

Stiles is well known for his tenacious tackling, the pinnacle of which was when he took Eusébio da Silva Ferreira out of the game in the 1966 World Cup semi-final.

He will be expected to do a similar job against Dele Ali, Alexis Sanchez and whoever is playing for Celta Vigo.

Jose Mourinho, perhaps inspired by Sir Alex Ferguson bringing back Paul Scholes in 2012, was delighted to coax Stiles out of retirement.

“He’s quicker than Daley Blind, in better shape than Luke Shaw and just generally better than Wayne Rooney.”
