After overtaking the UK as the world’s fifth largest economy, India has decided to outsource the majority of its call center work to the UK.

India’s Home Affairs minister announced on Twitter that the country had taken a “big leap” to secure the fifth spot behind the US, China, Japan and Germany.

“It now makes economic sense to pay UK workers minimum wage in order to run our inbound and outbound call centers,” tweeted Kiren Rijiju.

Ian Fletcher, a phone operator from Newcastle, has been asked to adopt a more ‘neutral’ accent.

“I have to say that my name is Ravijit Singh. It’s demeaning.”
