Manchester United have signed Brazilian international Fred for £52 million as a direct replacement for mascot Fred the Red.

Fred is expected to step right into Fred the Red’s role of coming on at halftime to dive over penalties taken by 7-year-old prize winners or Japanese hospitality clients.

Jose Mourinho was generous in his praise of the outgoing Red Devil.

“Fred the Red has been a great servant to the club,” said Mourinho.

“But he loses the ball too easily and is in nearly as bad shape as Luke Shaw.

“I had hoped to have replaced him with Marouane Fellaini but I suppose Fred will have to do.”
