FIFA have fined Wayne Rooney €10,000 after discovering that he wore a locket round his neck that contained a picture of Mother Teresa.
The England captain wore the locket in England’s game against Scotland last week. Rooney said that he only wore it as a good luck charm but the international governing body of football have ruled that it is a ‘political’ statement and as such was forbidden.
FIFA have also opened disciplinary proceedings against England and Scotland for wearing poppies in Friday’s World Cup qualifier. Players from both countries wore black armbands bearing a poppy during England’s 3-0 win at Wembley, with the game taking place on Armistice Day.
FIFA would not speculate on any outcome or provide an estimated timeline but a spokesperson stated that they were, “Taking the matter very seriously.”
