Wayne Rooney was astonished when he was charged with a DUI by police, as he thought that playing football in Liverpool meant that drink driving was legal.
“It was a long time ago but I’m sure when I played for Everton back in the day, we all used to drink and drive and nobody stopped us or cared,” recalled the star striker.
“I remember Duncan Ferguson drank a whole bottle of tequila once before driving home from training. The police stopped him, but when they saw it was Duncan, they just told him to have a nice day.”
Rooney also assumed that as he was retired from England duty, he could drink and drive during the international break.
“Guess I’ll have to find something legal to do instead in the future,” conceded Rooney.
“Like car theft.”
